New Year Post – 2011

This is very late… but I’ve done this survey for the last ten years so it wouldn’t feel right if I avoided it.

Here we go- time to think about 2011

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
-published a book- not just any book- one with a spine
-co-ordinated a metric poop-ton of artists for a graphic novel
-moved to Scotland
-made my way to a supervisor position zing! And of course tried out self employment
-went to Orkney, through the Hebrides and all over Scotland- not to mention- Birmingham, Portmeirion and a load of other places in England.
-shook Taylor Hanson’s hand
-I cooked delicious stew and veggie lasagna
-tried loads of new food
-acquired stellar coffee making skillzzzz

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I of course did not keep my new years’ resolutions… well not all of them. And yes, I will continue to make them and not keep them.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Loads surely- Facebook reminds me of this.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Luckily no. Although I feel like some of my guts did.

5. What countries did you visit?
England, Scotland, Canada.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
… gaaahhh this is hard… motivation? Not that I wasn’t motivated in 2011… I guess I just lacked conviction.

7. What date(s) from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
-the day I got my gig with Blank Slate- just so bloody excited
-TCAF and visiting my folks- happy travel family goodness
-my Scotland adventure- TRAVEL~ schwing!
-the whole process of moving to Edinburgh…
-My Haggis Christmas

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finishing Galavant, printing it and then selling out at TCAF.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Letting people down.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I did but nothing to write home about-

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My trip to Scotland in September.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Behavior always seems so strange a word- but Adam Cadwell was my partner in crime for most of this and thus deserves celebration.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
We won’t go here. I do not call people out on the interweebs.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Travel, bills and rent weee!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting in to TCAF, seeing Galavant in print the first time, meeting Jeffrey Lewis, going to Portmeirion, travel in Scotland and exploring my new city.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2010?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Quite a bit of time has passed since December but I’d have to say I was happier as last December I was stuck at Starbucks and entirely exasperated- this December I think I felt like I was sorting my life out- still kinda feel that way. Not to mention I’d just came back from spending my holidays in the highlands. Good times.

ii. thinner or fatter?
Tres thinner. Woo jogging.

iii. richer or poorer?
I’m definitely richer than I was last year. This is good.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I’m constantly frustrated with how little I’ve read over the last few years. It’s fucking appalling. Not to mention how much travel I feel like I’ve missed out on just due to circumstance. *grumble grumble*

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Apologizing – this one remains the same. I need to harden a bit. Not be an asshole… but just… y’know.. grrr

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent my Christmas on a Haggis Adventure in the highlands. On Christmas Day I climbed Ben Bhraggie and thus I shall brag about that. It was awesome. I legitimately had an epic time. It wasn’t as nice as it would have been to be hanging with my family but it was literally the best I coulda done.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
I did.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Ooooo got into Gossip Girl, The Wire, Community, 30 Rock, Bored to Death, hmmm yeah. True Blood…

23. What was the best book you read?
I fail. Nothing to report really. I read some things and they were good but shhh shh shhh fail.

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?
-Summer Camp
-Youth Lagoon
-The Head and the Heart
-Or, The Whale
Loads more surely… but yeah.. that’s the top

25. What did you want and get?
Argh – damn you survey damn you! … I dunno…

26. What did you want and not get?
To answer this I’d have to know what I want.

27. What was your favorite film of this year?
I really dug Black Swan and The King’s Speech… Crazy, Stupid, Love was ace too.

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were ya?
I turned 27- I woke up in the morning iced my cake, opened presents and then ate some of that cake while watching Home Alone. Then I went to the airport to pick up my parents and my sister… had a bit of a rambling afternoon as hotel shenanigans got sorted but it all ended well with a meal at the Banyan Tree nom nom.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Having a decent job. That would have made all the things better.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
All of the dresses with all of the black tights with cardigans and belts.

31. What kept you sane?
Mr. Arthur Dela Cruz and Mr. Scott Hunt. They are both legends.

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Probably Ted Danson.

33. Who did you miss?
My familia and Arturo.

34. Who was the best new person you met?
Some of the Pat Val staff- Deb Hemer and Chris Rodwell.

35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011?
Good grief… humans really are- all too human. That I should allow myself a little more wiggle room for error… I dunno… bah so much.

New Years Post – 2010

Here we go- time to think about 2010

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
-started a webcomic (thus learned loads of stuff related to that)
-did my first comic convention
-made my first zine
-made my first comic collection
-moved to a new country
-sold the vast majority of my belongings
-didn’t work for 6 months by choice
-went to Scotland and loads of other places
-went to Glastonbury :D
-went to a film premiere and walked the red carpet (Scott Pilgrim)
-Saw Tegan and Sara LIVE!
-I saw The Flaming Lips, Frightened Rabbit, Vampire Weekend, Stevie Wonder, Kate Nash, Malcolm Middleton, Silver Mt. Zion etc live- all bands I had never seen in concert before
-I cooked a cottage pie
-tried loads of new food
-learned how to make tons of fancy coffees although I don’t drink the stuff

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept quite a few but to be fair but things shifted so much this year so my priorities changed. But yeah, I’ll make more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I feel like a ton of people had kids but it’s hard to keep track of all the new babies. Thank you Facebook.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Luckily no

5. What countries did you visit?
England, Scotland, Canada- wish there were more

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Some weird form of stability. 2010 was easily the roughest year yet. I was so glad to move on to another year.

7. What date(s) from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
-Adam and I’s start to our relationship
-how emotionally draining it was to sell and get rid of my possessions and yet freeing.
-the week of Glastonbury was huge.
-The Valentine’s / Modern Romance weekend
-Beth and Paul’s wedding
-Thought Bubble weekend
-Jim and Stacy’s wedding

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Oh god. I guess I should say moving to a new country but I don’t know if that was so much an achievement…
Probably my progress with comics.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Oh Christ, I guess I didn’t fail, just learned a few lessons is all. But I don’t exactly feel like a winner this year…

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yeah but let’s not talk about sickness

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Didn’t buy a heck of a lot considering my unemployed state. So probably just train tickets to different places.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Hmmm not sure.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
Meh, not important.

14. Where did most of your money go?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Going by how I felt in December when this should have been written- Sadder but optimistic (from my opinion now I’m WAY happier and I’m on my way up)

ii. thinner or fatter?
The same

iii. richer or poorer?
So so so poor

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I wish I’d read more, wish I’d done a bit more travel when I had the money to do so-

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Apologizing

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I had to work at Starbucks all through Christmas so it was my first time away from my family- little tough
But Adam’s family came down for a visit and a meal which was nice and Christmas Eve was spent with friends playing Kerplunk and watching films. Christmas Day it was Adam and I makin’ turkey and watching Christmas flicks.

21. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Sure did. With Mr. Adam James Cadwell

22. What was your favorite TV program?
True Blood, Mad Men aaaand Top Model… ooo and the Bachelorette hahaha

23. What was the best book you read?
Oi, didn’t read much. So probably Charlotte Roche- Wetlands. Laughed out loud many-a-time.

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?
-The Bird and the Bee
-Holy Hail
-Vivian Girls
Surely there was way more … but I didn’t get a chance to listen to too many new tunes.

25. What did you want and get?
Well I wanted to flip my life over. Did that. Success.

26. What did you want and not get?
To answer this I’d have to know what I want.

27. What was your favorite film of this year?
Hmmm- really dug Scott Pilgrim of course. I will stick with that. Scott Pilgirm.

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were ya?
I turned 26- Adam and I ate cake and watched Home Alone- then I went to the movies to watch Eat, Pray, Love- then we tried to see Josie Long do a comedy show but because I have epic bad luck on my birthday she couldn’t make it- so we grabbed food at Trof with Joe and Lynn then called it a night.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I didn’t toil away at Starbucks for so long. If I would have had just a scooch more cash so I wouldn’t have been in debt for the last 6 months to my bf.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Lots of leggings, blue dancin’ shoes, lots of dresses and cardigans

31. What kept you sane?
I’m not quite sure but thank you thing that kept me from losing it-

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Stephen Fry. ALL THE WAY!

33. Who did you miss?
My folks.

34. Who was the best new person you met?
Mr. Adam James Cadwell. :D

35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010?
Hard work pays off eventually- but you really really have to wait for the pay off. Thus I add, patience is a virtue

2009- New Year Survey

Here we go- time to think about 2009

1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
-started drawin’ comics thus inking and the like- learnin’ Photoshop
-I went to London, UK (then decided to live there for a while)
-flew somewhere for a weekend
-got my G2 driving license
-chose unemployment
-went on a wine tour
-was a bridesmaid in a wedding
-I saw The Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Fuck Buttons, La Roux, Bishop Allen etc live- all bands I had never seen in concert before
-I cooked a bunch of new stuff
-tried some food I’d never had before

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept most of my resolutions, or at least gave ’em a good go. The problem here is that as the year goes on things happen, priorities change- blah blah blah. But yes, I will be making more for 2010.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I feel like a ton of people had kids but it’s hard to keep track of all the new babies. Thank you Facebook.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Grandpa O’Malley.

5. What countries did you visit?
The UK.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Oh God, loaded question. I guess I’m gonna go with- a little more focus. I would like to get more done- Haha. Thus, more time.
2009 was pretty rough truth be told- so perhaps just a bit more fun. Less stress and brain melting.

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Hmmm not sure about specific dates, but some months with particular events stand out:
Apr- Hardest month at work in the history of life. I didn’t get a lunch break for over 3 weeks.
May- TCAF! HURRAH!
Sept- Going to London, Dan and I ending our relationship
Oct- Dan’s sister Michelle’s wedding, my grandfather passing and the funeral, going to London on a whim
Nov- Going to London again, my extreme emo-ness to the power of 17 and Bevan & Arthur’s epic friendship pullin’ me out of it, moving out of my apartment and throwing my stuff into storage, and finishing NaNoWriMo again
Dec- Hangin’ with a new friend, time at home with my folks, my Grandma O’Malley fainting at church, movin’ to London
(basically the last four months have been just… :O)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Doin’ NaNoWriMo and pullin’ out 12,000 words in one night. Also, some of the drawings I’ve done have startled me. I think in my head, I’m shittier than I really am.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Oh Christ, I guess I didn’t fail, just learned a few lessons is all. But I don’t exactly feel liker a winner this year…

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
*knocks on wood* nothing really. I think I may have got the common cold and that’s about it. WIN!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Laptop! So awesome. I love this little guy. My plane tickets as well as concert tickets.

Hmmm not sure.

Meh, not important. I’m the one who let them make me feel that way.

Savings, rent, travel, books, dvds, cds, comics, food…

I wish I’d drawn a bit more- read too. Wish I’d actually recorded some music. Damn the man.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Went to my mum and dad’s and just hung out for a few days. My grandma O’Malley and my Uncle Pat joined us and later my sister and her boyfriend Erik. A few bumps in the road but it was good. I lacked the spirit this year though.

Noooo… no I don’t think I did. A hesitant no.

Zero because I’m a hero.

Hmmm haven’t watched too too many sadly.
So far I dug all the cheesy ones I saw- 500 Day of Summer and Paper Heart. Don’t laugh at me, I’ll cut you.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were ya?
I turned 25 and I was at Dan’s sister Michelle’s wedding rehearsal and dinner. So I drank a bit, spent some time with Michelle in her hotel room then chatted a wee online & went to bed.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Geeeeezus why is this survey so hard this year? Fuck you survey!! Um, god. I have no regrets but this year wasn’t easy. But it was necessary. So what would have made this year more satisfying is if it could have ended much quicker.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Saying no to pants. “NO PANTS NO!”- so lots of tights/ leggins- dresses, belts, scarves, boots, cords, long necklaces….cardigans, bigger glasses.

33. What kept you sane?
I’m gonna echo what I said last year “My own stubborn determination”.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Colin Meloy because he woo’d me

35. Who did you miss?
My parents and friends throughout the year

36. Who was the best new person you met?
Julia! Sarah! Howard, Nevs, Del, Mark, Phil, etc etc lots of London people.
Dave! I know I’m missing some people… met many lovely people this year.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009?
I’m tempted to say “shit or get off the pot”- so there we have it folks.
Shit. Or get off the pot.
