Resolutions Renewed and Reflected 2013

September 22, 2014

These were my resolutions for 2013-

1-read 52 books. I only read 19
2-learn geetar properly. I did take the time to study music theory again making my way through a theory book. But I didn’t really devote the right amount of time to an instrument.
3-record a few covers … at least 3. Nada.
4-write one song. Doesn’t have to be good. Just give it a go. I did write some lyrics…
5-complete current comic project and release it at Thought Bubble- if not, TCAF 2014 but make sure that I’m happy with every. single. page. I did a lot for my comic project – finished the script, designed characters, made a proposal book. But it’s not completed and it won’t see the light of day for a while.
6-work with watercolour. Gave it a go but I need to work on it more.
7-try keeping a journal/sketchbook every day I was totally winning at this until I got the gig at Cult MTL :(
8-catch up on TED talks.
9-complete a second draft to one of my writing projects. Just one. Nope.
10-pay off debt and start saving for project Haus. We did pay off a lot of debt but it’s not entirely gone…

Hmmm so let’s see… for 2014 I will resolve to do the following-

1-Read 30ish books? Try for 50 if you can
2-Play some guitar.
3-Work on your comic. Maybe rework the script a bit.
4-Fill up 2013’s moleskine
5-Get half-way through all the TED talks
6-At least read your first drafts for your books Kayla.
7-Pay off all debt. You can do it.

That’ll do.

New Year Post – 2013

September 22, 2014

Here we are – 9 months late but still necessary – my reflections on the year 2013:

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
-Got my rook pierced
-Bleached my hair and subsequently dyed it ginger, strawberry blonde, green, turquoise and navy blue
-Bought a whole new wardrobe at one store
-Enjoyed a night out in Glasgow
-Made over-easy eggs without fucking them up
-Designed artwork for a CD single
-Watched roller derby live
-Saw Daughter live and met them after
-Attended a Fringe festival
-Interviewed Guy Maddin, Edgar Wright, Nick Frost, Wiley Wiggins and some other neat folks
-Shook hands with Tegan & Sara and passed them my proposal for my comic book
-Went on a Dyke March
-Had lunch at a five star restaurant for work
-Actually made an effort with my Halloween costume
-Got my make-up done by a pro
-Did all the touristy things in NYC
-Saw Polica and James Blake
-Most importantly: got engaged

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t think I’ve ever kept them all but I generally make headway on some. So yes, I will definitely make more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Lots of people had many-a-baby but none that I’m so tight with that they let me hang out with them. :( No baby hangs in 2013.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Luckily no.

5. What countries did you visit?
Scotland, England, United States and Canada technically

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
Probably cash. Heh. I feel like the whole debt scenario is fine but I’d like to maybe live without it now.

7. What date(s) from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
-February 20th- Roisin going back to Scotland to sort out her visa
-March 7th- Roisin’s EP Launch
-March 29th-31st- Flying home for Easter with my family
-May 5th- Roisin’s return to Canada
-May 6th- Daughter live
-May 10th- My final day at Protocol
-May 11th- My first day at Cult MTL
-July 17th- Giving Tegan & Sara my comic proposal
-August 1st Lianne La Havas live
-October 21-25th NYC with Roisin
-December 18th- Roisin’s Wiggle Room win
-December 24th- Roisin’s proposal

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Probably all the work I did with/for Cult MTL. Making the return to journalism was really challenging but also so bloody rewarding.
I also think, on a more personal level, that the months after Roisin’s return from Scotland were really difficult for us. So it goes without saying that I’m stoked at how we managed to overcome so much and end up stronger in the end.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I don’t really feel like I failed at much in 2013. I did learn a lot. Hmmm, maybe I should have been a bit more vocal in some instances but I think in general I did my best when I could.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I got about 12 different versions of the call centre flu when I was at Protocol… and I did manage to go through a good chunk of time where I would spew after having 3 pints. I guess in that category I could include my hangover after Halloween.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Trip to New York
Roisin’s secret guitar
Some delicious meals and pastries…

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I would argue that Roisin Tuohy always merits celebration. ;)

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
Haaaaaaa so many people… let’s not name names

14. Where did most of your money go?
My credit card and a little bit of travel

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Roisin coming back to Canada
Visiting Roisin in Scotland
Seeing Scott in Scotland
Leaving Protocol
Giving Tegan & Sara my comic
Ryan & Val’s engagement
Hangin’ out in NYC
Lewis’ visit to MTL
Roisin’s secret guitar
Getting engaged

Lianne La Havas- Gone
James Blake- Case of You
Bombay Bicycle Club- Carry Me
Ms Mr- Dark Do Wop, Hurricane

Jessie Ware- Wildest Moments
Men- Credit Card Babies
Animal Collective- My Girls
Son Lux- Lost It To Trying
Black Skinhead- Kanye West
Rae Spoon- Love Is a Hunter, Bethelightbethelightbethelight

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
I’d say happier. Things are becoming more clear and I’m no longer working a shitty job.

ii. thinner or fatter?
Probably the same. I think I generally let go of the reins at Christmas and then I work out much more in the new year.

iii. richer or poorer?
Poorer *sigh* – so it goes

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I did read and draw much more. I just wish that I could find the balance to do these things while working at Cult as well. So I guess I wish I’d balanced my schedule a bit more…

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Probably worrying about money.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I will be attending a delicious meal at my Aunt Diane’s house prepared by my cousin Samantha.

21. Did you fall in love in 2013?

The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex, The Marriage Plot- Jeffrey Eugenides

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?

25. What did you want and get?
A better job
And a promise to live out my days with my lady

26. What did you want and not get?
To pay off my debt

27. What was your favorite film of this year?

The Way, Way Back
Blue is the Warmest Colour
Inside Llewyn Davis
In a World
Salinger
Jingle Bell Rocks
Derby Crazy Love
My Prairie Home

28. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were ya?
I turned 29- I had the necessary chocolate cake (with pistachio ice cream) while watching Home Alone. At the drink ‘n’ draw that I run at NDQ earlier in the week, Amanda made me a surprise cake. The steak dinner that Roisin and I cooked turned out kind of shit though. We kept things low key.

29. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A bit more cash and perhaps a bit more time.

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
Shorts, tights, docs, primark shirts, ginger fur or other funky hair – so I guess one could say Primark chic or Ghost World meets the New Girl.

31. What kept you sane?
Roisin. She was really all I had/needed a lot of the time.

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmmm does the entire cast of ER count?

33. Who did you miss?
Scott and Scotland. And of course I missed Roisin while she was away.

34. Who was the best new person you met?
Everyone at Cult
The ladies from Diamond Bones
Kate Conner & Family

35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013?
I like 2012’s: Being nice isn’t the best thing to be.

November-December 2013: Green hair, Santa and a ring

August 1, 2014

The end of 2013 was pretty eventful.

I started to take advantage of some of the perks of working at Cult by attending a few concerts. First, Polica, who were kind of disappointing. I love their albums but they just didn’t really bring it live. They do a double drum kit scenario (which felt like a bit of gimmick), I felt like the high end wasn’t really covered. But what can you do? It’s a rare thing to get a band that delivers both.

We also saw James Blake which was also kind of disappointing. I don’t really know how to explain it. Roisin and I agree that we maybe would have liked to see him in a more intimate venue. There were some incredible moments – but the concert as a whole wasn’t stellar.

And of course we saw more of the Diamond Bones… who continued to be amazing.

In early November I was finally allowed to decorate for Christmas and we also had a visit from Roisin’s producer/multi-instrumentalist pal Lewis who stayed with us for a few days. We took him to Cora’s and tried to tick some Canadian must-have boxes, like, poutine-eating.

Before the weather got really cold we tried to cram in as many epic long walks as we could. For Montrealers, I’m talkin’ walks from Acadie metro to Vendome – that’s the only thing I really don’t like about the winter. It doesn’t allow for that level of saunter/adventuring.

I almost dumped Roisin because she wouldn’t go to the Santa Claus parade with me, I still bring this up frequently to remind her that she has to make it up to me this year. (A Canadian Santa Claus parade tour?) And we also got a metric poop-ton of snow. A lot, a lot, a lot of snow. Which of course made the long trip to my folk’s place for the holidays extra long and treacherous.

But before we left to hang with family- Roisin performed for the first time at the Wiggle Room‘s Voix-de-Ville variety show and won the whole thing. It was a crazy night. Our landlord showed up for the performance, we got to meet people like Vincent Pimparé and we were entertained by the antics of our host Kitty Vanderbuilt. I think it’s one of the best night’s in Montreal- well worth the $10 cover.

Then I started to play around with manic panic hair dye. I grew tired of the whole ginger thing and thought while I was self-employed it’d be a shout to do things that wouldn’t be allowed in other work environments. It also felt festive ;) I took photos with anything I could find that matched the hair colour because I’m lame.

But the most exciting thing that happened was Roisin asking me to marry her. :O EXCITING!

We’d obviously chatted about it loads but little did I know she’d been planning her proposal throughout the whole year: calling my parents to ask their permission and working with meshu.io asking them to make a ring (which they initially said no to as they hadn’t made any before – Roisin’s suggestion has now turned into more business for them as they now make sterling and nylon rings).

She hid the ring in an hollowed-out antique leather bound copy of Alice in Wonderland which I opened on Christmas eve. I didn’t see it coming at all. It took me way too long to say “yes” as I felt compelled to repeatedly say “Really?! Oh my god! Really?! WHAT?!” I’m the worst.

The ring is a map of where I lived in Edinburgh, where we first met (Boda) and where we went on our first date. So thoughtful, so personal *swoon*. My lady is indeed the best lady.
