Colin Meloy of The Decemberists woo’d me!

Last night I finally got to see The Decemberists live. It hasn’t been years and years of waiting or anything- but since University I’ve wanted to check ’em out to no avail. Now I can say with confidence, I highly *highly* recommend that if given the chance you should get some tickets. They. Are. Fantastic.
(Not to mention they had wicked banter in between- crowd pleaser yes, yes)

They played “Hazards of Love” all the way through and (as my buddy Jen said they would) they came back out and played some of their other songs, followed by another encore.

I ended up at the Kool Haus (bleck! cringe-worthy name) just shy of two hours before the doors would open and lucked out by landing a spot right at the front and center. As I may fancy Mr. Meloy to the power of 12, this turned out to be a wise choice.
(Also as a side story this mother and daughter duo from Kingston who were at the front of the line had to be pushed aside when the doors opened due to the type of tickets they had, luckily I squished some people along so when they finally made their way in I could wave ’em over. Let’s be honest here, waiting for hours to get anywhere but the front is balls. They were super nice though and we became somewhat companions for the evening. The daughter (Ana), her camera ran out of memory so we exchanged info so they can get some photos. )

The set list that I pulled off the interweeb is as follows but the encores don’t seem quite right so I may edit that later. (*edited)

Setlist:
Prelude
The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won’t Wrestle the Thistles Undone)
A Bower Scene
Won’t Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga)
The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All)
The Queen’s Approach
Isn’t It a Lovely Night?
The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid
An Interlude
The Rake’s Song
The Abduction of Margaret
The Queen’s Rebuke/The Crossing
Annan Water
Margaret in Captivity
The Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!)
The Wanting Comes in Waves (Reprise)
The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned)

Encore:
The Crane Wife 3
Shiny
Billy Liar
Down By the Water-new song
Rox In the Box-new song
The Sporting Life
Dracula’s Daughter
O Valencia!
Crazy On You (Heart cover)

Encore 2:
Eli, the Barrow Boy
Sons & Daughters

And now because of my luck of getting such a sweet sweet spot, I now present a deluge of some of the best photos that I took. (These can also be found under my Photography section.)

And of course because I am an overgrown fangirl I lingered by the bus to get my CDs signed.

Autographs:

Hazards signed by Colin Meloy, Jenny Conlee, Chris Funk, Nate Query, John Moen, Becky Stark and Shara Worden respectively

This photo kind of makes me laugh because I became a bit of a loser and asked Colin for a “snuggle” to which he replied “Snuggle? What’s that?”. Of course I told him that a snuggle is just a hug but I call them snuggles. To which he responded “Ok let’s snuggle then!”. This of course made my girly fan heart melt and drip all over his shoes. Then after harassing him with snuggles I later on asked him for a photo too, the man was so nice about it- Seriously pleasant guy.

Too much handsome for me *deep breaths*

And finally, I’ll leave you with some of the videos that I took at the show. There’s more to be found on my YouTube site.

Hazards of Love 1:

Becky’s part in Won’t Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga):

Shara’s part in The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid:

The Rake’s Song (full):

A really, really short clip of O Valencia! but it kind of gives you an idea of my proximity to el stage:

He woooooeeieooeieoied you? Did heeeooooeiiiieiee sioooiiiiooiiing toooiieauiioio yoouioeaouuou also?

Sorry, I’m sure it was a great show, but I think we’ve had the discussion about my intense urge to shake that put-upon accent out of him. C’mon Colin, just pronounce the vowel that’s there, not all the others at the same time! I really like “16 Military Wives” and am slowly, slowly building my tolerance for more.

  2. arthur Says:

dude. can you smile any harder in that thar picture? I’m in love with your camera, btw.

    and I heart heartless bastards.

  3. Kayla Hillier Says:

Liam- you should really come to the dark side. I promise it’s worth it. Tolerance will soon turn to swooooon!

Arthur- my face exploded in smile it’s true. I can tell because my lips disappeared.
The weird thing is… it’s not a fancy camera at all haha

  4. Tova Says:

Pictures are wicked! Incredible you were in the audience when taken. You have a steady hand and excellent composure girl!

  5. Kayla Hillier Says:

Thank you Tova! Taking visual art through high school for the win!

  6. OkiDoki Says:

Holy crap. I think I would have fainted if I were you. Colin Meloy is my hero, as are the Decemberists in general. I saw them at the Treasure Island Music Festival in October. I desperately wish I could’ve gotten within twenty feet of him, nevermind getting his autograph and a “snuggle”. Ah… I love Colin…
Anyways, I just have to congratulate you on that brilliant encounter. Nice pictures too. And yes, the Decemberists are truely one of this generation’s most brilliant bands. Hooray!

  7. Kayla Hillier Says:

Awww thank you so much! I’m glad you dug the photos! Totally stick around after a show and I’m sure you could get something signed. Super nice people.

And yes, I agree they are one of this gen’s most brilliant bands- heck yes!
